8:40 - 9:00 - Students arrive. All second graders must empty their backpacks, order lunch, do their classroom jobs, sharpen pencils, and begin their morning work before the 9:00 bell. Students also like to socialize with their friends (an important part of second grade) during this time.
9:00 - We begin our day with prayer, followed by the pledge, and our mission.
It is good to remind ourselves on a daily basis why we are here at Sacred Heart School!
9:10 - Spelling/ Phonics If we do not have a special, we get right to work on our Spelling and Phonics. We practice the phonetic sound of the week. We include coding from the Saxon Phonics series and will soon be doing the Phonics Dance (little jingles about many of the sounds). Spelling tests are on Thursday and Friday.
10:15 - Reading - Students read a variety of reading material, including trade books with the class, paperbacks in book clubs or small groups, and plays with their classmates. We will learn skills such as predicting, inferring, questioning, visualizing, and summarizing.
11:30 - Religion - Blest Are We is the name of the book we are using. We will also be using many supplemental materials. We typically learn a lesson a day with the test on the chapter on Friday. In August/September we are learning about Baptism.
12:00 - Lunch and then recess
12:40 - Bathroom break and Handwriting
1:00 - Math We check our Simple Solutions homework, and then do a lesson in
Go Math. Students will do a worksheet for assessment which is checked immediately. We also take a Mad Minute - Monday through Thursday. Math homework is a lesson in Simple Solutions Math every night.
2:00 - English - Lesson of the Day and Journaling. If we have time, we also have Author's Chair. Students love to share their writing with others! After they read their story, students ask for "feedback" from their peers. We all try to help each other make our "good stories, even better!"
2:30 - Science or Social Studies - August/September's themes are space and communities. Each Friday we will do a STEM activity.
3:00 - Time to start packing up! We fill out our Homework Log, pack our backpacks, and then listen to Mr. Adams's announcements at 3:15.
3:25 - Dismissal bell. Goodbye everyone! Make sure you do your homework and say your prayers! :)
